Vraggiana, also known as Megala Vraggiana, is one of the most mountainous and historic villages of the Municipality of Agrafa. Built at an altitude of approximately 1,080 metres, beneath the imposing peaks of Tsekoura and Katarachia, the village lies within an authentic mountain landscape of dense forests, alpine peaks and the dramatic terrain that characterises the Agrafa region. The settlements of Valari, Karya, Koustesa, Elatos and Kritharia belong to the local community.
The older name “Vraniana” is already recorded in a Meteora codex dating from the 13th–14th century, while one theory links the village’s name to the Byzantine Vranas family and another to the Franks. In the centuries that followed, the village experienced remarkable intellectual and cultural growth and developed into an important centre of learning in Agrafa, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage that complements the natural beauty of the area.
